Pol Martínez-Balart
Postdoctoral Associate
Pol was born and raised in Barcelona, where he grew up in the small town of Vilassar de Dalt. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Barcelona, where he focused his research on asymmetric hydrogenations under the supervision of Prof. Antoni Riera. During his time in Barcelona, Pol joined Enantia for eight months, working in large-scale manufacturing and medicinal chemistry. After this experience, he undertook his MSc studies in Organic Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela. For his final project, he joined the laboratory of Prof. José Luís Mascareñas, investigating Rh-catalysed methods for the C─H activation of heterocycles. Completed his MSc, Pol started his doctoral studies in the Fañanás-Mastral group at CiQUS, where his research focused on the development of novel photocatalytic strategies for the functionalization of light hydrocarbons and methane. In 2025, he moved to the University of Manchester to start a postdoctoral appointment in the Crisenza group. His endeavours target the development of new electrosynthetic strategies for the poly-functionalization of unsaturated hydrocarbons and the activation of Csp3–N bonds.
Besides chemistry, Pol is passionate about mountain hiking, watching rugby, and visiting craft beer taprooms.
